Skimming walls and ceilings
Skimming applies a thin plaster finish over a suitable background to create a smooth surface for decoration. We check the condition underneath, agree repairs and prepare the surface before applying the finishing coat.
Ceiling skimming
Skimming for plasterboard ceilings and sound existing ceilings with tired or uneven finishes. Cracks, damaged patches and the condition of any existing coating are checked before we agree the preparation and finish.
Re-skimming existing plaster
Sound old plaster can often be prepared and re-skimmed. Loose or hollow areas may need removing and repairing first. We check adhesion and surface condition so a new coat is applied to a suitable background.
Plasterboard skim finishing
Finish newly installed plasterboard on walls or ceilings, including agreed joint preparation, corners and junctions. We can coordinate the skim coat with our plasterboarding service; board installation is specified separately in the quotation.
Plaster repairs & making good
Repair damaged patches, holes and agreed areas following electrical or plumbing work. We assess cracks before making good, because recurring movement or an unresolved damp problem needs attention beyond a cosmetic patch.
Corners, reveals & preparation
Careful preparation around window and door reveals, edges and adjoining surfaces. Suitable priming, bonding and corner details are selected for the background and included in the agreed scope of work.

The cost depends on the area being skimmed, the condition of the existing surface, preparation required, ceiling height and access. We provide written quotations following photographs or a site assessment.
A sound wall needing a skim coat involves different preparation from damaged plaster or a ceiling that needs repairs. We confirm the surfaces to be finished, repairs, materials and any additional work in your quotation before starting.

What your surfaces need, how we prepare them and when to plan the decorating.
What is the difference between plastering and skimming?
Skimming is a thin finishing coat over a suitable surface, such as plasterboard or sound existing plaster. Plastering is the broader service and can include repairs or base-coat work where required. We confirm what your surfaces need in the quotation.
Can old plaster be skimmed?
Often, yes, if the plaster and any existing finish are sound and suitable. Loose, hollow or damaged areas may need removing and repairing first. The cause of damp or recurring cracks should be addressed before a new finish is applied; skimming alone will not resolve those problems.
Can you skim a ceiling?
Yes. We skim suitable plasterboard ceilings and sound existing ceilings. We assess the surface, cracks and existing coatings first, then agree any repairs or preparation. A skim coat creates a smooth finish; it does not correct an unstable ceiling or structural movement.
Can you skim over Artex or a textured ceiling?
This needs an assessment first. Older textured coatings, including some Artex finishes, may contain asbestos. Any asbestos risk needs to be assessed before work that could disturb the coating. We would agree a suitable approach before offering a plastering finish; specialist advice or testing may be needed.
How long does plaster take to dry, and when can it be painted?
There is no single drying time for every room. It depends on the plaster system, background, thickness, temperature and ventilation. Allow the plaster to dry fully before painting and follow the paint manufacturer’s preparation instructions. We’ll explain the drying and decorating steps for your project and can quote for painting separately.
When does a wall need re-plastering rather than skimming?
If the background is sound and the issue is the surface finish, preparation and re-skimming may be enough. Where plaster is loose, hollow or badly damaged, affected areas may need removing and rebuilding before the finishing coat. We assess the extent of the problem and explain whether local repairs or more extensive plastering are appropriate.
Can you install plasterboard as well?
Yes. Our stud-wall and plasterboarding service covers internal partitions and framed linings on the inside of external walls. Boarding, insulation and the plaster finish are agreed as part of the project scope.
What do you need to prepare a quotation?
Your postcode, photos, approximate wall or ceiling measurements and a short description of the existing surface are a helpful start. Please mention any damage, access restrictions and whether you also need plasterboard or painting. A site assessment may be needed to confirm the work.
